How image processing and background removal work

SECND can process listing photos automatically — background removal, cropping and sizing to each marketplace's requirements. This page covers what the processing does, how to configure it, and the cases where you should leave a photo alone.

Why image processing matters more in resale

In new-goods retail, one product photo is reused across thousands of units. In resale, every item needs its own photos, which means photography is a recurring per-item cost rather than a one-off. Anything that reduces the manual work per photo compounds.

It also matters because marketplaces are not neutral about images. Several of them favour listings with clean, consistent, correctly-sized photography in their own search ranking, and a few enforce it as a policy.

What the processing does

  • Background removal, replacing a cluttered background with a clean colour or transparency.
  • Cropping and centring so a set of listings looks consistent rather than hand-shot.
  • Resizing and format conversion to meet each marketplace's image requirements.
  • Batch application, so a whole intake session is processed rather than one photo at a time.

Configuring it

Image processing is a setting rather than a per-item decision. You choose whether automatic background removal is on, what background colour replaces the original, and how many photos per item it applies to. Setting it once and letting it run is the point — a per-item decision would reintroduce the labour you were trying to remove.

When to leave a photo alone

Background removal is not universally good. There are three cases where it actively hurts.

CaseWhy to skip removal
Furniture and large itemsBuyers use the room for scale. A floating credenza on white is harder to judge, not easier.
Styled or vintage clothingContext sells the aesthetic. Depop and Grailed buyers respond to styled photography.
Items with fine edgesLace, fur, jewellery chains and hair. Automatic cutouts struggle and the artefacts look worse than the original.

The general rule: remove backgrounds for catalogue-style items where consistency and clarity sell, keep context for items where the styling or the scale is part of the value.

Frequently asked questions

Does background removal affect the AI draft?

Drafting reads the item, so a cleaner image can help. But do not remove backgrounds in order to improve drafting — shoot better source photos instead, because that improves both the draft and the listing.

Can I set a brand background colour?

Yes. A consistent background colour across your catalogue is one of the cheapest ways to make a resale shop look like a brand rather than a pile of individual listings.

What image sizes do marketplaces need?

They differ, and they change. SECND sizes images per channel so you do not have to track it. The practical advice is to shoot larger than you think you need — you can always downsize, and marketplaces increasingly reward high-resolution imagery.

Will processing slow down my intake?

It runs in the background on a batch, so it does not block you. You keep photographing while earlier items process.
